Defib Partnership endorsed for its work in the Community.

We would like to share some wonderful news with you this week.

Two coordinators from the partnership were invited to attended The South Western Ambulance Service Fountain Trust( SWASFT) awards evening at Dillington Hall Illminster, where the partnership was awarded     "Defibrillator Accreditation Award"    by the Chief Executive Ken Wenman.

The partnership was put forward for the award by the SWASFT  Dorset Responder Team  in recognition of the defibrillator project.

The award at the annual ceremony is a wonderful achievement  for the partnership which in eighteen months has provided seven devices , with another six in the pipe line.

The devices have already gone to six incidents in Swanage in support of medical emergencies.

Having the project endorsed and acknowledged by South Western Ambulance reflects the hard work and contributions the partnership along with the community has brought to the Swanage area.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us to achieve our goals so far.

LIFEPAK CR Plus and LIFEPAK EXPRESS AED's

We have had several people contact us today concerned that they have seen a safety warning regarding defibrillators.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency have issued the warning that there may be an electrical Fault with some LIFEPAK CR Plus and LIFEPAK EXPRESS automatic external Defibrillators (AED).  This means that some of them may not deliver an electric shock to someone who is in cardiac arrest.

The Swanage Community Defibrillator Partnership can confirm they DO NOT have any of this type of Defibrillator.

The devices in the partnership cabinets are iPAD SP1, which are all registered with South Western Ambulance and the UK Supplier.

The Partnership regularly check their devices in line with the Governance Structure, South Western Ambulance  and the UK Resus Council.

In any medical emergency call 999 and ask for Ambulance.

We had an idea

Eighteen months ago , four people came together with a common idea.

That idea was to provide community accessed defibrillators for the benefit of Swanage and the surrounding area.

Maggie Hardy,  (RGN)  previously the Swanage hospital manager and Rotarian

David Corben , Local Estate Agent , ex RNLI crewman and usually the 1st on scene during incidents in Station Road.

Kyle Hickman, Police Officer before emigrating to Australia in September 2016.

Ian Brown  Control Room Trainer and Station Officer of Swanage Coastguard

The four of us came together with and idea to provide four devices in the town.  Thanks to the generosity of the town that idea is growing with currently seven devices installed.

In early 2016 we were very lucky to be joined by Lisa Mattei a Resuscitation Officer who is our technical advisor and leads on the education training provided by the partnership.

This is the coordinating group of the partnership who have in the last eighteen months had many meetings to look at different devices and cabinets, as well as putting a comprehensive governance structure in place.

The Swanage Bowling Club have kindly donated £500 to fund a defibrillator and Cabinet at Beach Gardens today.

Beach Gardens is a target area for the  Swanage Community Defibrillator Partnership as it's halfway between the devices at North Beach and Shore Road.

Collecting the donation following the Bowls Club Presidents Day, Ian Brown thanked all the members and confirmed the partnerships vision of providing a device along with awareness training with the members of the club.

The Bowling Club committee have been very committed in supporting the partnership from the start of the year and today saw another step forward in providing a device in memory of one of the clubs members

New Defibrillator taken to incident

A call to the Coastguard just after midday , stating a male on a vessel in Swanage was having a heart attack saw one of the new devices taken to the scene.

The vessel made its way to the pier to be met by the emergency services.  A RNLI crewman hearing event on the radio also attended.

The Coastguard team arrived and one of the team obtained the Defibrillator from the Rowing Club close to the pier.

Thankfully on arrival  the male didn't require the device and shortly after a paramedic turned up to take over the medical care.

The AED was checked and returned to the cabinet ready for service.

The male was treated by South Western Ambulance.

Awareness Workshops Start

The first awareness workshops were held last week to allow people to understand what you do in an emergency and how to use an AED.

These pilot workshops worked very well lasting between 45 minutes and an hour.

The partnership hopes to do some more workshops in September with the dates to be announced.

To allow everyone to have a practise, each workshop is limited to 6 people so we will have to book places.

Our thanks to the Coastguard for the use of the training room to allow the workshops to take place.

Using an I Pad AED

Part of the project is to provide awareness of the defibrillators.

We hope to run some workshops in the next few weeks to allow people to practise , dates will be released soon.

In the meantime here is a short video on how to use them.

Always phone 999 and never touch the casualty when the device tells you to stand clear.

Sunday 26 June 2016

Thank you to our supporters

Whilst a few people are behind the project to provide defibrillators into the Town and surrounding area , it really couldn't have happened without the donations and support from the Community.

This is just a few at the moment , along with some private individuals and groups  who have kindly donated to provide further devices.

Also 3 special people need a mention

Simon Walden "Plug it "
Dan Seldon Electrical
Dave Barrow Electrician

All 3 electricians have given their time freely to install the cabinets - and on Purbeck Stone that was no easy task.

If you would like to donate to support us , please call into Corbens in Swanage Road.

Locked or Unlocked ?

We note from social media that one of the latest cabinets to be installed has caused some concern as its not locked.

As a partner in the Swanage and Community Defibrillator Partnership , Dorset Police applied to the British Heart Foundation (BHF)  for a cabinet and device under the BHF  scheme.

That application was a success and its been kindly been installed in Swanage along with our other cabinets.

The British Heart Foundation have a policy on cabinets being unlocked and there is a debate in the world of resuscitation if a cabinet should be locked as it can be seen to delay a response.

This cabinet was also chosen to assist Dorset Police respond to incidents and "grab" the device if required.

The reason the other cabinets in the town  are locked is so a member of the public needs a device, they have to call 999 and ask for the Ambulance.

Having got through to Ambulance the release code will be given , an ambulance dispatched but more importantly an operator will remain on the line to give CPR advice.

We really hope that a vital piece of life saving equipment is not tampered with,   the equipment is tagged and the cabinet has an internal alarm fitted.

Its important to remember in a medical emergency to call 999 and ask for Ambulance and follow the instructions they give you.

This advice will include advice where the nearest AED cabinet is

Shore Road Device goes 24 hours

For a couple of years the Town Council have hosted a AED inside the Tourist Information Centre on Shore Road.

Today that device has been transferred to a new cabinet on the Toilet Block with the staff able to have access until its officially registered by South Western Ambulance.

Another device joins the network

Another mega effort by the installation team see's the next cabinet up at the Swanage School tonight.

We are just waiting for some signage to arrive and then we can register the cabinet and device with South Western Ambulance.

Our 1st official site at the Swanage Coastguard Station went live this morning .  This cabinet replaces one which has worn out and doesn't have a heater.

In a medical emergency call 999 and ask for Ambulance - from there you will be guided to the nearest device as well as getting an emergency response on the way.

Many people have been involved in this partnership, but special thanks to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for their assistance in allowing this cabinet to be installed.

Another Cabinet Installed

Those in Station Road tonight may have seen the latest cabinet being put up on the Railway building.

This cabinet was kindly provided by a local business and its location chosen to cover Station Road as well as the Railway Station and Co - op.

The cabinet isn't live yet as some final adjustments have to be made as well as well as being commissioned - we will keep you posted.

This cabinet is a true partnership working , provided by a local business, working with the Railway and the Town Council and installed by a couple of local tradespersons ( and two coordinators)

Until this cabinet goes live a device is temporary located in Corbens Estate Agents 41 Station Road during opening hours.

If you would like to donate to the Partnership please call into Corbens - every penny counts towards new devices for the town.

The importance of CPR and using an AED (Defibrillator)

This video produced by the Resuscitation Council tells a story of how important carrying out CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is along with the use of a Defibrillator.

This young mans story is why we are raising funds for devices in and around Swanage.

Thursday 2 June 2016

Temporary Device placed in Station Road

Following the incident in Swanage this week, the partnership have placed a temporary device for use in Corbens Estate Agents 41 Station Road Swanage.

This actual device will be installed at the top of Station Road in the next couple of weeks however it was felt important the device become available as soon as possible rather than sit waiting.

Remember to call 999 and ask for the ambulance.

The device is available during office hours of Estate Agents.

Wednesday 18 May 2016

1st New Cabinet

The first cabinet purchased by the Partnership has been attached to the wall at the Coastguard Station , North Beach Car Park tonight.

We hope the power connection  and commissioning will take place in the next week , which will finally see the defibrillator transferred to this new heated cabinet.

In the meantime the device remains by the front door of the station.

Keeping the devices warm is vital as in hard frosts they will shut down and takes them out of service.

This cabinet is dedicated to Michael 'Spike' Williamson , a Coastguard of 30 years.

Monday 2 May 2016

New Cabinets start to arrive

Two new cabinets have arrived and will shortly be installed.

The 1st will be a replacement at the Coastguard Station in North Beach Car Park , this replaces a non heated cabinet which is showing its age in our environment.

The 2nd , along with a new defibrillator will be installed on the railway station building next to the taxi office.  This cabinet will be available for central Swanage and was kindly provided by a local business.

These cabinets are heated and will protect the defibrillators from the elements.

More details will follow as the cabinets are installed.

Friday 25 March 2016

Access to a Public Access Defibrillator

EMERGENCY DEFIBRILLATOR (AED)
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

In the event of a suspected cardiac arrest, the following procedure should be used:

1. Call 999 and ask for the ambulance service.

2. When asked by the operator, please give the telephone number from where you are calling and the location of the cabinet which is:

Swanage
Dorset
BH

3. The operator will ask a series of questions which you will need to answer to the best of your ability. This will only take a few moments and will not delay the ambulance.

4. The operator will then provide you with the access code to open the cabinet.

5. The defibrillator and resuscitation pack should be removed from the cabinet and the ambulance service will stay on the line and give verbal instruction if required.

6. Switch on the defibrillator and it will then provide you with verbal instructions for use.

7. The defibrillator cannot be used incorrectly as it will only deliver a shock to the patient if it detects it is necessary.

8. There are scissors in the resuscitation pack to assist with removal of clothing and a pocket rescue breath mask for use with ventilations in CPR.

9. If you are unable or unwilling to give ventilations, simply do “hands only” chest compressions.

Remember THINK safely.
Look around before pushing the button to shock and SHOUT the command STAND CLEAR SHOCKING and then check to make sure everyone is clear.

The Project

The Swanage Community Defibrillator Partnership (SCDP) has been established by a group of representatives from local organisations seeking to purchase and maintain strategically located Lifesaving equipment for the town and neighbouring villages.

Currently in Swanage we have three public accessed defibrillators that can be accessed 24 hours a day via 999 and the Ambulance Service.

By calling 999 you get the assistance on the way and the access code for the cabinets to release the defibrillator.

Currently the devices are outside at.

The Masonic Lodge Marshall Row Swanage ( different to the device shown )

Swanage Coastguard Station, North Beach Car Park De Moulham Road

Ulwell Cottage Caravan Site , Ulwell Road

There are other devices which include one at the Tourist Information Centre Shore Road, but these are only available when the premises are open.

With Swanage being at the end of the Purbeck peninsula and with an ageing demographic , rapid access to such equipment can and will save lives.

The initial aim of 'SCDP' is to raise funds to install 3 further devices for the town.

These locations are Station Road , Herston and one for local groups to use at events.

It's not only the defibrillator that's important in a life saving emergency it's also CPR, and the partnership will hopefully hold some workshops to encourage and make people aware of how to use defibrillators.

Today ( 18th March ) the Partnership has placed its first order of one device and two cabinets. This was after a very generous donation from a local business, and working with the Town Council and Swanage Railway the location of the device will be at the top of Station Road.

The second cabinet will replace the current one at the Coastguard Station to bring it up to the new standards of having to have a heated cabinet.

The cabinets are easily recognised like this one at Lyme Regis

The partnership has a lot more work to register the devices with the Ambulance service, create its own website, fund raise, install the cabinets and provide awareness education on CPR and the device.

Many Swanage groups , agencies, and people have been involved and SCDP wish to thank you all so far.

Donations can be made via Corben's 41 Station Road Swanage.
